Coy, "Ted" (Edward H.)
Football
b. May 24, 1888, Andover, MA
d. Sept. 8, 1935
A 6-foot, 195-pound fullback, Coy was an All-American at Yale in 1908 and 1909. He was a very strong runner and also surprisingly elusive. As a sophomore in 1907, he had touchdown runs of 60, 80, and 105 yards, and a 70-yard run against Army was wiped out by a penalty.
Coy was a particular nemesis of Princeton. Yale trailed Princeton 10-0 at the half in 1907, but Coy scored two second-half touchdowns that won for Yale, 12-0. In the 1908 game, Coy started at end. With Princeton leading, 6-0, he moved to fullback and scored two more touchdowns in an 11-6 victory.
Because of an appendectomy, Coy missed the first four games of the 1909 season. He entered the game against Army in the second half with orders not to carry the ball, and he threw a touchdown pass to win the game.
After scoring a touchdown and a field goal in Yale's 17-0 victory over Princeton, Coy starred as a kicker against Harvard. His long, high punts continually gave Yale good field position, and he kicked two field goals in an 8-0 win that closed out an undefeated season. During his three years, Yale won 26 games while losing only 1 and tying 2.
