In just three years of competition, Craig won five major sprint events, including two Olympic gold medals, and twice tied a world record.
Competing for the University of Michigan, Craig was the IC4A 200-meter champion in 1910 and 1911, both times tying the record of 21.2 seconds for the straightaway race. He was also the 100-meter champion in 1911, running a collegiate record 9.8 seconds.
Howard Drew edged him in the 100-meter trials but strained a tendon in a heat and couldn't run in the Olympic final. Craig won the event in 10.8 seconds and took a second gold medal in the 200-meter with a time of 21.7 seconds.
He retired from competition after the Olympics. In 1948, Craig was an alternate on the Olympic yachting team and he carried the U. S. flag at the opening ceremonies in London.
