Cromwell graduated from Princeton University in 1956 and did graduate work at both Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He won the national quarter-mile single sculls from 1961 through 1964, the 1½-mile in 1961 and 1962. After winning the Diamond Sculls at the Henley Regatta in 1964, Cromwell teamed with James Storm to take an Olympic silver medal in the double sculls event.
A naval architect, he helped design the 12-meter yacht Nefertiti and was one of her crew when she took part in the 1964 America's Cup trials. However, she wasn't chosen to defend.
Cromwell died of cancer at the age of 43.
