Championships Won
Daniel won consecutive U. S. Women's Amateur championships, in 1975 and 1976, while a student at Furman. She joined the LPGA tour shortly after graduating and was named Rookie of the Year in 1979. She was named LPGA player of the year in 1980, when she won four tournaments and more than $200,000 to lead the tour in winnings, and she led in winnings again in 1981.
Back problems hampered her swing and her play for several years and she missed part of the 1988 season with mononucleosis, but came back strong, finishing in the top ten in nine of the eighteen tournaments she entered. She tied with Juli Inkster in the Atlantic City Classic, but lost on the first hole of a sudden death playoff.
Daniel won four events in 1989, when she won the Vare Trophy with a 70.38 scoring average, a record at the time. She also became the seventh LPGA player to pass $2 million in career earnings that year.
Daniel won her first major tournament, the LPGA Championship, in 1990, when she won the Vare Trophy and the Player of the Year award, and was named Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year.
In 1994, Daniel again won the Vare Trophy and Player of the Year honors.
The 5-foot-11 Daniel generates tremendous power with a smooth, natural swing, and can hit the ball both high and far. She also has an excellent short game. Through 1992, she had 32 tournament victories and more than $5 million in tour earnings, fourth on the all-time.
