Danowski, Edward F.

Football

b. Sept. 30, 1911, Jamesport, NY

Danowski played tailback in the Notre Dame box formation at Fordham University and joined the NFL's New York Giants after graduating in 1934. He played behind Harry Newman most of the season but took over for the last three games after Newman suffered two broken vertebrae on November 18.

The 1934 NFL championship game was played on an icy field at the Polo Grounds. Trailing 10-3, the Giants came out wearing sneakers for better traction in the second half. They fell behind 13-3 in the third quarter but scored 27 fourth quarter points to win 30-13. Danowski threw a 28-yard touchdown pass and ran 6 yards for another touchdown.

As the starter in 1935, Danowski passed for 795 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushed for 335 yards. He threw a 42-yard touchdown pass for the team's only score in a 26-7 loss to the Detroit Lions in the championship game.

The Giants won the 1938 championship by beating the Green Bay Packers 23-17, with Danowski throwing touchdown passes of 20 and 23 yards.

The 6-foot-1, 198-pound Danowski became a backup in 1939 and retired after that season. However, he returned to the Giants in 1941 before entering the service. Danowski took over as head coach at Fordham in 1946 and had a 29-44-3 record in 9 seasons.

In his NFL career, Danowski completed 311 of 645 passes for 3,867 yards and 39 touchdowns. He rushed 455 times for 1,232 yards and 4 touchdowns.
