Dean, Everett S.

Basketball

b. March 18, 1898, Livonia, IN
d. Oct. 28, 1993

A three-year starter at Indiana, Dean was named All-American center in 1921, his senior year. He also played football and baseball. After graduating, he coached basketball and baseball at Carleton College in Minnesota for three seasons, winning 45 games and losing only 4 in basketball.

He returned to Indiana in 1924 as baseball and basketball coach, remaining through the 1937-38 season. His basketball teams compiled a 162-93 record and tied for three Western Conference (now Big Ten) titles, while his baseball teams won four conference championships.

In 1938, Dean went to Stanford, again to coach two sports. His 1942 basketball team won the NCAA championship, beating Dartmouth 53-38 in the final game. He coached basketball through the 1950-51 season, winning 166 games and losing 120. Dean continued as baseball coach until his retirement in 1955.
