A right-handed pitcher, Denny struggled with arm problems through much of his career. But he was healthy in 1983, when he won the NL's Cy Young Award with a 19-6 record and a 2.37 ERA to help lead the Philadelphia Phillies into the World Series.
He won the first game of the series 2-1 over the Baltimore Orioles. It was the only game the Phillies won. Denny was the losing pitcher in a 5-4 Baltimore win in the fourth game.
Denny entered the major leagues with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1974 and led the NL with a 2.52 ERA in 1976. He went to the Cleveland Indians in 1980 and was traded to Philadelphia near the end of the 1982 season. He finished his career with Cincinnati in 1986.
In 13 major league seasons, Denny had a 123-108 record, 18 shutouts, and a 3.59 ERA. He struck out 1,146 hitters and walked 778 in 2,148 innings.
