DePietro was less than five feet tall, and his arms were so short that he could just barely raise a weighlifting bar above his head. But he won the world bantamweight championship in 1947 and was the Olympic champion in the weight class in 1948.
He won nine U. S. weightlifting championships in a ten-year period, as a bantamweight in 1942 and 1943 and from 1946 through 1951 and as a featherweight in 1945. DePietro also won a gold medal in the 1951 Pan-American Games and finished third in the 1949 world championships.
