Career Statistics
A two-time All-American quarterback at Brigham Young University, in 1990 and 1991, Detmer won the 1991 Heisman Trophy as a junior. In four years as a starter, Detmer completed 958 of 1,530 passes for 15,031 yards and 121 touchdowns, with only 65 interceptions. He holds NCAA career records for attempts, completions, yards passing, and touchdown passes.
The 6-foot-tall, 183-pound Detmer was considered suspect by NFL scouts because of his slender frame and he wasn't chosen until the ninth round of the 1992 college draft, by the Green Bay Packers.
Detmer played little in Green Bay and went to the Philadelphia Eagles as a free agent in 1996. He was an occasional starter in Philadelphia for two seasons, then became a backup with the San Francisco 49ers in 1998. The new Cleveland Browns franchise signed him in 1999.
