Dionne, Marcel E.
Hockey
b. Aug. 3, 1951, Drummondville, Quebec
After leading the Ontario Hockey Association in scoring two years in a row, despite the fact that he missed 14 games with a broken collarbone in 1970-71, Dionne was chosen by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round of the NHL's 1971 amateur draft.
Dionne spent four seasons with Detroit, winning the Lady Byng Trophy for combining skill with sportsmanlike play in 1975, when he had 121 points and only 14 penalty minutes. He went to the Los Angeles Kings before the 1975-76 season and won the Byng Trophy again in 1977.
A solid 5-foot-8, 190-pounder, Dionne was an excellent skater and stick-handler with very tricky moves near the net. He won the Art Ross Trophy as the league's scoring leader in 1980, with 137 points on 53 goals and 84 assists.
The Kings traded him to the New York Rangers during the 1986-87 season and he played there through 1988-89 before retiring. In 1,348 games, Dionne had 1,771 points on 731 goals and 1,040 assists. He scored 45 points on 21 goals and 24 assists in 49 playoff games.
