Although there are no official records of his performances, Tim Donoghue is considered America's first great speed skater. He competed from 1863 to 1875.
His son, Joseph, became the first world champion from the United States. He won four world titles in 1891, the ½-mile, 1-mile, 2-mile, and 5-mile. He was also the world 2-mile champion in 1889 and he won the first U. S. outdoor championships, in 1891 and 1892.
