The 6-foot-8 Donovan succeeded Nancy Lieberman as the star of Old Dominion University's basketball team in 1980. She led NCAA Division I schools with an average of 14.7 rebounds per game as a junior in 1981-82 and her total of 504 rebounds in 35 games during the 1982-83 season is third highest all-time.
An All-American from 1981 through 1983, Donovan won the Wade and Naismith Trophies as the nation's outstanding woman player after her senior year. In her career, she scored 2,719 points in 136 games, an average of 20.0 per game. Donovan also collected 1,976 rebounds and blocked 801 shots, still the NCAA women's career reecord.
Donovan was named to the 1980 Olympic team that didn't compete because the U. S. boycotted the Moscow Games. She played for the gold medal Olympic teams in 1984 and 1988, and she was also a member of the 1986 world championship and the 1983 and 1987 Pan-American Games champions.
Since 1995, Donovan has been the head women's basketball coach at East Carolina University.
