Dooley, Vincent J.

An outstanding defensive back at Auburn University, Dooley captained the team in 1953 and played in the College All-Star Game the following August. He then served in the Marine Corps for two years.

In 1956, Dooley became an assistant coach at Auburn and was freshman coach at the school for three seasons before taking over as head coach at the University of Georgia in 1964.

Dooley coached at Georgia through the 1988 season, compiling a 201-77-10 record for a .715 winning percentage, including a 9-10-2 mark in post-season bowl games. He was consensus coach of the year in 1980, when Georgia won the national championship.

During his twenty-five years as coach, Georgia had only one losing season and won six Southeastern Conference championships. Dooley retired from coaching after the 1988 season but remains at the school as athletic director, a position he assumed in 1979. He ranks 10th all-time in NCAA Division I coaching victories.
