Drillon,"Gordie" (Gordon A.)
Hockey
b. Oct. 23, 1914, Moncton, NB
Drillon and Syl Apps formed one of hockey's most prolific scoring combinations with the Toronto Maple Leafs during the late 1930s and early 1940s. One reason for their success was that they practiced together for hours, against goalie Turk Broda, with Apps shooting and Drillon deflecting the puck into the net. Drillon won the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's top scorer in the 1938-39 season, when he had 52 points on 26 goals and 26 assists, many of the goals coming on deflections.
After playing minor-league hockey in Pittsburgh and Indianapolis, Drillon joined the Maple Leafs in 1936. He played with them through 1941-42, then went to the Montreal Canadiens for one season before retiring. During his seven NHL seasons, he scored 155 goals and had 139 assists in regular-season games and added 26 goals and 15 assists in 7 playoff series. He was the league's all-star right wing in both 1937/38 and 1938/39.
