The Montreal Canadiens called Dryden up from the minor leagues to play goal near the end of the 1970-71 season. In 6 games, he gave up only 9 goals, and he started for the Canadiens in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Although he had a couple of shaky games, he also made some spectacular saves in the final series against the Chicago Black Hawks as the Canadiens won the Stanley Cup. Dryden won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs.
The following season, he won the Calder Trophy as the NHL's outstanding rookie, and he went on to win the Vezina Trophy, awarded to the league's top goaltender, five times--in 1973 and from 1976 through 1979.
An All-American at Cornell, Dryden sat out the 1974-75 season to earn his law degree at McGill University in Montreal. He retired after the 1978-79 season to practice law.
In eight seasons, Dryden won 258 games to 57 losses and 74 ties. He had 46 shutouts and a 2.24 goals-against average. He appeared in 112 playoff games, winning 80, with 10 shutouts and a 2.40 average.
