b. June 7, 1968, Gary, IN
The first black athlete to win a national gymnastics championship, Durham won the balance beam, floor exercise, vault, and all-around titles in 1983 and tied for second in the uneven bars. She also won the gold medal in the all-around and the silver in the uneven bars at the McDonald's International Championships that year, but injured a knee and couldn't compete in the other individual events.
After finishing third in the all-around at the Chunichi Cup competition in December of 1983, Durham missed the finals of the 1984 American Cup competition and had to withdraw from the Olympic trials because of the recurring knee injury, which forced her premature retirement.
