Skiing
b. Oct. 14, 1914, Tarpon Springs, FL
Durrance fell in love with skiing while attending Peekskill, NY, Academy and he went to high school in New Hampshire to pursue the sport. He enrolled at Dartmouth College in 1934. There were no national intercollegiate championships at the time, but Durrance won the U. S. men's downhill, slalom, and Alpine combined in 1937, while still a student.
He repeated in all three events in 1939 and also won the slalom and combined titles in 1940 and the slalom for a fourth time in 1941. Durrance was a member of the 1936 Olympic ski team and was named to the 1940 team that didn't compete because of World War II.
In 1938, Durrance began working as a still and motion picture photographer at Sun Valley, ID, then a new ski resort. He trained para-ski troops during the war and in 1947 he became manager of the resort in Aspen, CO. He later made commercial and industrial films and designed ski areas.
