One of the greatest scorers in the early history of the NHL, Dye joined the Toronto St. Pats in 1919 and remained with them through the 1925-26 season. After one season with the Chicago Blackhawks, he broke a leg during training camp in 1927. The following year, he made a comeback with the New York Americans but retired after scoring only once in forty-one games.
Dye was the league's top scorer in 1922-23 with 26 goals and 11 assists and in 1923-24 with 38 goals and 6 assists. He finished among the top five four other times. Twice he scored five goals in a game and he scored four in a 5-1 victory over Vancouver that won the 1921 Stanley Cup for Toronto.
After retiring as a player, Dye coached the minor-league Chicago Shamrocks and was an NHL referee for five years. In 9 NHL seasons, Dye scored 202 goals and had 41 assists. He added 9 goals and 2 assists in 3 playoff series.
