Representing Stanford University, Eastman won the IC4A 880-yard run in 1931. He set three world records in the spring of 1932, running the 440-yard in 46.4 seconds and the 880 in 1:51.3 and 1:50.9.
Eastman won his second IC4A half-mile title in 1932, but finished second to Bill Carr in the 400-meter at the Olympic trials and Olympic Games that year.
In 1933, Eastman began to specialize in the 800-meter/880-yard event. He won the 880-yard run at the IC4A meet again that year and was the 880 champion at the 1934 AAU nationals.
Eastman set world records in two rarely-run indoor events in 1933, running the 500-meter in 1:02.0 and the 600-yard dash in 1:09.2. He lowered the world record for the 880 to 1:49.8 in 1934.
After retiring late in 1934, Eastman returned in 1936 in an attempt to make the Olympics, but he ran fifth in the 800-meter at the trials and retired permanently.
