Elliott, Bill (William C.)

b. Oct. 8, 1955, Dawsonville, GA

Warm and personable, Elliott is a perennial winner of NASCAR's most popular driver award. He began racing in the Winston Cup circuit during the 1976 season, but didn't claim his first victory until 1983, when he had 22 top-ten finishes in 30 races.

Elliott won 11 races in 1985, including the Daytona 500 and the Winston 500 at Talladega, AL, collecting $2,383,187 in winnings. He also won at Daytona in 1987 and was the Winston Cup champion in 1988.

In qualifying for the 1987 Winston 500 at Talladega, Elliott recorded the fastest time ever in a stock car, 212.809 mph.

Through 1999, Elliott had 278 top-ten finishes, including 40 victories, and $21,718,093 in earnings, which ranks 5th all-time.
