Bobsledding
b. June 28, 1933, Montreal, Quebec
As a spectator at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina, Italy, Emery discovered bobsledding. After returning to Canada, he organized the Laurentian Bobsledding Association with his brother John, a surgeon; Peter Kirby, who had been a competitive skier at Dartmouth College; and Douglas Anakin, a high school teacher.
None of them had ever tried bobsledding before, but they led from the first through the fourth and final run to win the gold medal at the 1964 Winter Olympics, the first time a Canadian team had ever entered.
In 1965, Emery and Kirby teamed with Michael Young and Gerald Presley to win the world championship.
