Emtman, Steven C.
Football
b. April 16, 1970, Spokane, WA
Red-shirted as a freshman because the University of Washington coaching staff couldn't decide what position he should play, Emtman became a starting defensive tackle in 1989. The 6-foot-4, 300-pounder won the Outland and Lombardi Trophies as the nation's outstanding collegiate lineman in 1991.
Though he still had a year of eligibility remaining, Emtman entered the NFL draft of college players in 1992, saying it wasn't for the money "but rather the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream of playing pro football."
The Indianapolis Colts made him the first player chosen in the draft, but Emtman spent most of the season on the disabled list with an injury to his right knee. Early in the 1993 season, he injured the other knee and had to undergo a series of operations. Emtman finally got back into the lineup late in the 1994 season.
However, knee problems continued to plague him. He went to the Miami Dolphins as a free agent in 1995 and spent 1997 with the Washington Redskins before being forced to retire.
