After working in Pennsylvania coal mines for six years, beginning at the age of fourteen, Engle played baseball, basketball, and football at Western Maryland College, graduating in 1930.
Engle coached high school sports and did graduate work before becoming an assistant coach at Brown University in 1942. He took over as head coach in 1944.
His Brown teams had a 28-20-4 record in six seasons. Engle went to Penn State in 1950. He never had a losing season there, compiling a 104-48-4 record. Engle's teams won two Liberty Bowls, beating Alabama 7-0 in 1953 and Oregon 41-12 in 1960, and they won the 1961 Gator Bowl 30-15 over Georgia Tech. Penn State suffered a 17-7 loss to Florida in the 1962 Gator Bowl.
Engle retired after the 1965 season with an overall record of 132 wins, 68 losses, and 8 ties.
