Ewell was the top sprinter in the world in 1940, when the Olympics were canceled because of World War II. He finally got his chance to compete in the Olympics in 1948. He won silver medals in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and ran on the gold medal 4 by 100-meter relay team.
As a student at Penn State, Ewell won both sprints at the NCAA meet in 1940 and 1941 and at the IC4A meet from 1940 through 1942. He was the AAU outdoor 100-meter champion in 1941, 1945, and 1948, the 200-meter champion in 1939, 1946, and 1947.
He also won the long jump at the IC4A outdoor meet from 1940 through 1942; at the IC4A indoor meet in 1940 and 1942; and at the AAU indoor meet in 1944 and 1945.
Ewell tied the world record of 10.2 in the 100-meter dash at the 1948 AAU championship, which was also the Olympic trials.
