Ferry, Danny [Daniel J. W.]
Basketball
b. Oct. 17, 1966, Bowie, MD
The son of Bob Ferry, a former NBA player who became general manager of the Washington Bullets, Danny was born to play basketball. He was even sent to DeMatha High School in Washington, DC, which has produced many outstanding players. Ferry was one of the few white players in the history of the inner-city school.
Named the best high school player in the country by Parade magazine in 1985, Ferry entered Duke University after graduating from DeMatha. Averaging 19.1 points as a junior and 22.7 as a senior, he was twice named the Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year. The U.S Basketball Writers Association and United Press International selected him college player of the year in 1989, when he also won the Naismith Award.
Drafted by the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers, Ferry chose to play for the Il Messagerro team of Rome in the Italian League in 1989-90, when he averaged 29.3 points a game. In the meantime, the Cleveland Cavaliers had acquired his rights, and Ferry joined them in 1990.
As a professional, Ferry has been a solid journeyman, but never a star. After 10 years with the Cavaliers, he signed with the San Antonio Spurs as a free agent in 2000.
