Fielder, Cecil G.
Baseball
b. Sept. 21, 1963, Los Angeles, CA
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Fielder was a part-time first baseman and designated hitter with the AL's Toronto Blue Jays from 1985 through 1988. A right-hander, he was used only against left-handed pitchers.
Displeased with his status, Fielder went to Japan to play for the Hanshin Tigers in 1989. He batted .302 and hit 38 home runs in just 106 games, missing the last month of the season with a broken finger.
The Detroit Tigers of the AL signed him in 1990. Used primarily at first base, Fielder led the major leagues with 51 home runs that season and he also had a league-leading 132 RBI and .592 slugging percentage. He was the AL home run and RBI leader again in 1991, with 44 and 133.
Late in the 1996 season, the Tigers traded Fielder to the New York Yankees. He spent two seasons there and finished his major-league career in 1998, when he played for both the Angels and the Indians.
