Football
b. Nov. 12, 1896, Spring Race, GA
d. July 17, 1978
Fincher played guard, tackle, and end at various times during his five-year career at Georgia Tech when it became the first southern school to win national prominence. Coached by John W. Heisman, Fincher was a guard on the undefeated 1917 team that was considered the best in the country after beating Pennsylvania 41-0 and Auburn 68-7. Fincher kicked 49 extra points that season.
The 6-foot, 190-pound Fincher played mostly at end in 1918 and 1919, then moved to tackle for his final season. However, Walter Camp named him an All-American at end that year, when Georgia Tech lost only to Pittsburgh. Grantland Rice put Fincher at tackle when he named his all-time All-American team in 1939.
