Findlay began rowing on the University of California crew. After graduating in 1956, he got into sculling. He was a member of the Olympic pair-oared shell with coxswain teams that won gold medals in 1956 and 1964. He rowed with Dan Ayrault and coxswain Kurt Seiffert in 1956, with Ed Ferry and coxswain Kent Mitchell in 1964.
He was also a member of Dennis Conner's crew on the boat that took a bronze medal in Tempest Class yachting at the 1976 Olympics. Findlay served on Conner's crew in the 1974 America's Cup trials, was a mast man in Ted Turner's 1977 America's Cup defense, and crewed for John Kolius at the 1983 trials.
