A remarkably nervous man for a rifle champion, Fisher played the violin to relax before his matches. He was once so nervous during a competition that he just stood and aimed for twenty minutes without firing. Finally he was ordered to fire and his shot went wide, but the spell was broken and he went on to win the match.
Fisher won five Olympic gold medals, in the free rifle, military rifle, and free rifle team in 1920, and in the individual free rifle and free rifle team in 1924. He won the national free rifle championship in 1923, the world prone position championship in 1923, and the world kneeling position championship in 1923 and 1924.
A gunnery sergeant in the U. S. Marine Corps from 1913 to 1934, Fisher was called back to duty as a shooting instructor during World War II.
