Flowers was an unusual boxer, especially for his time, a religious man and a steward in the Methodist Church who was nicknamed "Deacon." When World War I began, Flowers went to work in a Philadelphia shipyard. One day he visited a gym run by Philadelphia Jack O'Brien, decided to start sparring, and discovered he could hold his own with more experienced fighters.

After the war, Flowers returned to Georgia and got a job as a porter in an Atlanta gym, where he also continued his training. The 5-foot-10 left-hander won his first 28 professional fights, from 1918 until late 1921, when he was knocked out by Panama Joe Gans.

Flowers had 90 bouts in the next four years, losing only 9, to win a middleweight championship fight against Harry Greb on February 26, 1926. Flowers took the title with a 15-round decision, but he lost it to Mickey Walker in a 10-round decision on December 3.

In 1927, Flowers lost only 1 of 18 fights, with 3 draws, before going to the hospital for eye surgery. He died of an infection just four days after his last bout. Flowers won 115 of his 149 professional fights, 49 by knockout. He lost 13, 8 by knockout, and also fought 6 draws, 14 no-decisions, and 1 no-contest.
