Foster, "Bud" (Harold)
Basketball
b. May 30, 1906, Newton, KS
A forward and center at the University of Wisconsin, Foster captained the team as a senior in 1929/30. Wisconsin won 43 games and lost only 8 during his 3 years as a starter. He spent five seasons playing professional basketball with teams in Oshkosh, Milwaukee and Chicago before succeeding Walter Meanwell as Wisconsin's basketball coach in 1935.
Foster basically used the deliberate, ball-control offense he'd learned under Meanwell, but his teams were also taught to fast break when possible. During his 25 seasons, Wisconsin won 270 games while losing 264. He coached the Badgers to the NCAA championship in 1941 and to three Big Ten titles.
He retired from coaching after the 1958-59 season, remaining at the school as professor of athletics.
