Fothergill averaged 207 pins as an amateur in 1966 and turned professional the following year. She was the top money winner on the women's tour and bowler of the year in both 1968 and 1969. Fothergill won the women's All-Star tournament and the PWBA national championship both of those years.

In 1970, Fothergill won the WIBC all-events title with a record 1,984 pins for 9 games and she was also singles champion with a 695 series. She teamed with Mildred Martorella to win WIBC doubles titles in 1971 and 1973.

Her game began to decline in the late 1970s and she retired from the tour in 1978 with 18 WIBC and tour victories in just 12 years. Fothergill returned to competition briefly in 1979 to win the first women's Great and Greatest tournament with Donna Adamek.
