Fulcher, David D.

Football

b. Sept. 28, 1964, Los Angeles, CA

An All-American defensive back at Arizona State University in 1984 and 1985, the 6-foot-3, 238-pound Fulcher was chosen by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round of the 1986 NFL draft.

There were doubts about his ability to star in pro football because he seemed to many somewhat too small to play linebacker and somewhat too slow to play defensive back, but Fulcher soon established himself as one of the best strong safeties in the league.

Selected for the Pro Bowl from 1988 through 1990, Fulcher was named to The Sporting News all-pro team in 1989. He missed the first month of the 1992 season with viral meningitis.

In 1993, he went to the Oakland Raiders but missed much of that season because of an injury that forced his retirement.

In his eight NFL seasons, Fulcher intercepted 31 passes and returned them for 246 yards, a 7.9 average, and 2 touchdowns. He also recorded 8 ½ quarterback sacks on safety blitzes.
