A first-round selection of the NFL's Green Bay Packers in 1951, Gain chose to play for the Ottawa Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. The Packers traded his rights to the Cleveland Browns and in 1952 Gain signed with Cleveland, who made him a defensive tackle.
After serving in the Air Force for a year during the Korean conflict, Gain returned to the Browns in 1954 and remained with them through the 1964 season. The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder started for NFL championship teams in 1954, 1955, and 1964.
