Garbisch, Edgar W.
Football
b. April 7, 1900, Washington, PA
d. Dec. 13, 1979
His father wanted him to be a concert pianist, but decided football was all right when his son was carried off the field by his Army teammates after a 12-0 victory over Navy in 1924. "No matter how magnificent the performance of Paderewski," he said, "the audience does not sweep up on the stage and bear the artist off in triumph."
A starting center for three years, Garbisch was also an excellent kicker. His 47-yard field goal from a very difficult angle beat Navy 17-14 in 1922 and his four field goals accounted for all of Army's points in that 12-0 win in 1924. The football captain in 1924, his senior season, Garbisch also captained the tennis team. He was named to Walter Camp's All-American team in 1922 and 1924.
