Gardner is probably the only athlete to win national championships in three different sports. Best known as a golfer, he won the national amateur championship in 1909 and 1915, was runner-up in 1916 and 1922, and played on four Walker Cup teams.
As a student at Yale, he became the first man to pole vault more than 13 feet with a height of 13-1 at the 1912 IC4A championships. And in 1926 he teamed with Howard Linn to win the national doubles championship in racquets.
