When he was just 15 years old, Garner led the nation's jockeys in wins with 151 and in money won in 1915. He was also the top money winner in 1929, when his mounts collected purses of $314,975, a record at the time.
Garner won three triple crown races, the 1929 Belmont Stakes aboard Blue Larkspur, the Belmont again in 1933 aboard Hurry Off, and the Kentucky Derby with Cavalcade in 1934. In 21 years of racing, he rode 1,346 winners and 2,358 other mounts that finished in the money, collecting purses totalling $2,419,647.
His great-grandfather, grandfather, father, and five brothers were also jockeys. Garner died of a heart attack in Covington, KY, shortly after riding in a race.
