The 5-foot-9, 195-pound Garrett was a consensus All-American halfback at the University of Southern California and winner of the Heisman Trophy as the nation's outstanding college player in 1965, when he led NCAA Division I runners with 1,440 yards on 267 carries. His 3,221 career yards was a record at the time.
A first-round draft choice of the American Football League's Kansas City Chiefs, Garrett signed a five-year, $450,000 contract in 1966 and led the league in yards per attempt, 5.5, as a rookie, gaining 801 yards and scoring 6 touchdowns on 147 attempts.
Although he was held to only 39 yards, Garrett scored a touchdown on a 5-yard run when Kansas City beat the Minnesota Vikings 23-7 in Super Bowl IV after the 1969 season.
Garrett was traded to the San Diego Chargers during the 1970 season. He retired after the 1973 season. He carried the ball 1,308 times for 5,481 yards, a 4.2 average, and 35 touchdowns; caught 238 passes for 2,010 yards, an 8.4 average, and 13 touchdowns; returned 39 punts for 235 yards, a 6.0 average, and 1 touchdown; and ran back 14 kickoffs for 323 yards, a 23.1 average.
