Gelbert, Charles S.
Football
b. Dec. 24, 1871, Hawley, PA
d. Jan. 16, 1936
Gelbert was a three-time All-American end at the University of Pennsylvania, from 1894 through 1896, a period when the ends were often considered the most important players on a team. On defense, they were responsible for protecting against long runs along the sideline and, on offense, they were responsible for trying to create such runs.
Though he weighed only 160 pounds, Gelbert was often moved to guard in order to lead interference on a running play. During his career, Penn won 40 games while losing only 1.
