A Helms Athletic Foundation All-American forward at Oregon State in 1924, Gill returned to the school as head coach in 1929. In 35 seasons, his teams won 599 games, placing him 12th on the all-time list, while losing 392. They won or shared five Pacific Coast Conference titles and went to the NCAA final four twice, in 1949 and 1963.
Gill suffered a heart attack during the 1959-60 season and was replaced by Paul Valenti during his convalescence, but he came back as coach the following year. He retired from coaching after the 1963-64 season to become the school's athletic director, a position he held until his death from a stroke.
