Goodfellow played for Detroit in the NHL for fourteen seasons and two name changes. He joined the Detroit Cougars for the 1929-30 season. They became the Falcons the following season and the Red Wings in 1933.
He won the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player two years in a row, in 1939 and 1940, and he captained the team during his last five years. Goodfellow retired after the 1942-43 season, having scored 134 goals and 190 assists in the regular season. In eight playoff series, he had 8 goals and 8 assists.
Goodfellow coached the Chicago Black Hawks for two seasons, from 1950-51 through 1951-52.
