Goodwin won gold medals in two different sports at the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis. He swam on the U. S. 4 x 50-yard freestyle relay team and played for the champion New York Athletic Club water polo team. Goodwin also won a bronze medal in plunge for distance.
He won the U. S. indoor 100-yard freestyle championship in 1903 and the outdoor 440-yard freestyle title in 1905. Because of blood poisoning, he nearly had an arm amputated in 1906, but he recovered and came back to win the outdoor 880-yard freestyle championship three years in a row, from 1910 through 1912.
