The 5-foot-9, 171-pound Gray spent two years at a junior college before going to Purdue University. He began his professional football career with the Los Angeles Express of the U. S. Football League in 1984.
A running back with Los Angeles, Gray rushed 258 times for 1,151 yards, a 4.5 average, and 4 touchdowns in two seasons. He joined the NFL's New Orleans Saints in 1986, and has been used primarily as a kick returner since then, with some time at wide receiver.
Gray led the NFL in punt return average in 1987, when he returned 24 punts 352 yards, a 14.7 average. He became an unconditional free agent after the 1988 season and signed with the Detroit Lions.
In 1991, Gray led the league in punt and kickoff return average. He ran back 25 punts for 385 yards, a 15.4 average, and 1 touchdown, and returned 36 kickoffs for 929 yards, a 25.8 average.
Through the 1993 season, Gray had returned 160 punts for 1,851 yards, an average of 11.6 yards, and he had run back 264 kickoffs for 6,374 yards, an average of 24.1 yards. He had 3 touchdowns on punt returns and 3 on kickoff returns.
