A pole vaulter as well as a gymnast in his early years, Gulack came to the United States in 1922. He was the U. S. champion on the rings in 1928 and 1935 and he won the 1932 Olympic gold medal in the event.
As an administrator, Gulack helped bring U. S. gymnastics into the international arena after World War II. He helped the Amateur Athletic Union develop a set of rules meeting international standards, served as a judge at international meets, managed U. S. teams at the Olympics and Pan-American Games, and served as an honorary vice-president of the International Gymnastics Federation.
