b. July 1, 1910, Derma, MS
d. March 6, 1975
Although he finished second to Robert Tisdall of Ireland in the Olympic 400-meter hurdles in 1932, Hardin was credited with tying the world record in 52.0 seconds, while Tisdall's time of 51.8 wasn't recognized under the rules of the day because he knocked over the last hurdle.
Hardin lowered the record to 51.8 in the 1934 AAU national championships, then turned in a remarkable 50.6 during a meet in Stockholm later that year. That record stood for nineteen years.
The tall, lanky Hardin won the 400-meter hurdles event at the 1936 Olympics. He was the AAU champion in the 440-yard hurdles in 1933, 1934 and 1936. Representing Louisiana State, he was the NCAA 440-yard dash champion in 1933 and 1934.
