Hawerchuk, Dale
Hockey
b. April 4, 1963, Toronto, Ontario
A 5-foot-11, 190-pound center, Hawerchuk played just two seasons of junior hockey before joining the NHL's Winnipeg Jets in 1981. He won the Calder Trophy as the league's rookie of the year after scoring 103 points on 45 goals and 58 assists. At 18 years, 351 days, he was the youngest player ever to have more than 100 points in a season.
After slipping to 91 points in his second year, Hawerchuk had 100 or more points in five consecutive seasons, from 1983-84 through 1987-88. On March 6, 1984, he set an NHL record with 5 assists in one period.
The Jets traded Hawerchuk to the Buffalo Sabres in 1990 for three players. After five seasons there, he went to the St. Louis Blues as a free agent in 1995 and scored his 500th goal with that team before being traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in mid-season.
Hawerchuk retired after the 1996-97 season.
