A four-year starter at guard for Bradley University, Hawkins led NCAA Division I scorers with an average of 36.3 points a game in 1987-88 and was consensus college player of the year. In his career, he scored 3,008 points in 125 games, an average of 24.1 per game.
Chosen by the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round of the 1988 NBA draft, Hawkins was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers before the season. He made the league's all-rookie team, averaging 15.1 points a game.
Hawkins' best season was 1990/91, when he averaged 22.1 points per game. Philadelphia traded him to the Charlotte Hornets before the 1993-94 season.
After four seasons in Charlotte, Hawkins went to the Seattle Seahawks. He played there through the 1998-99 season and was then with the Chicago Bulls for a season before returning to Charlotte for one final season.
