Haynes, Marques O.
Basketball
b. Oct. 3, 1926, Sand Springs, OK
As a guard at Langston University in Oklahoma, the 6-foot, 160-pound Haynes orchestrated a victory over the Harlem Globetrotters. His skills, and especially his incredible dribbling ability, won him a job with the Kansas City Stars, who toured with the Globetrotters.
After a half season with the Stars, Haynes joined the Globetrotters in early 1947. His displays of dribbling were a major part of the team's act, because the Globetrotters had become so good that they had to become showmen to keep spectators entertained.
Haynes left the Globetrotters in 1953 to tour with his own team, the Fabulous Magicians. After a brief return to the Globetrotters in 1972, he and Meadowlark Lemon toured with a team called the Bucketeers.
