Heida won five gold medals and a silver at the 1904 St. Louis Olympics. He tied with Edward Hennig in the horizontal bar and with George Eyser in the vault; he won the pommel horse and the four-event combined championship outright; he was a member of Turngemeinde Philadelphia team that won the gold in combined exercises; and he won a silver in the parallel bars.
He was the national champion in the vault in 1902. His victories at the Olympics were also considered national championships.
