Henke was with the AL's Texas Rangers for parts of the 1982, 1983, and 1984 seasons before being chosen by the Toronto Blue Jays in a special compensation draft in 1985. He immediately established himself as an outstanding relief pitcher.
A right-hander, the 6-foot-5, 225-pound Henke had 20 or more saves every year from 1986 through 1993, with a league-leading 34 in 1987. He became a free agent after the 1992 season and returned to Texas, where he had a career high of 40 saves.
Henke spent two seasons with Texas and one more with the St. Louis Cardinals before retiring.
Henke appeared in four AL championship series with the Blue Jays and had a 2-0 record with 3 Saves and a 1.65 ERA in 12 appearances. He had 2 saves and a 2.70 ERA in Toronto's six-game victory over the Atlanta Braves in the 1992 World Series.
